According to many viewers, Motrin ran an ad that was politically incorrect. The viewers were so outraged, they used their social media internet connections to express their dislike. The volume of social media against the Motrin ad forced them to apoligize to thier views and take the ad off the internet. This huge influence that the social media had, in this case,makes it a powerfully tool.

Obama’s use of crowdsourcing

According to Turoczy [ 1] president elect Obama used Social Media Networking to get the voters out and to get them excited about his concepts of “Change”. He used Blogs, Twitter and other WWW technologies to get people involved. He seems to be using the concept of “crowdsourcing”. That is; Obama has used mass collaboration (getting the masses involved) to define his campaign and to get people committed to their agendas led by him. He does this by using Web 2.0 technologies. His organization has created web sites to get citizens’ input and to publish information for them in an expeditious manner: change.gov (“a continued commitment to interact with the people on a very personal basis”) and another site to share their stories.
Turoczy believes that Obama is committed to crowdsourcing. Obama’s Said that the story of the campaign was about you (the citizens) and your hard work. We can bring this country together as a healed and united nation led by me and written by you.
I agree with Turoczy. Obama is creating his political agenda by soliciting input from the masses. It appears that Obama will use the peoples input rather than input from “The Good Old Boys”. He wants change and wants input from you. You will set the agenda. “The Obama organization continues to turn the political machine on its ear and continues to shake the conventional wisdom of” political strategy””.

Looks like Mighty Mouse

I inserted this image from my Flickr account. You can use Flickr as a store house for your photos. You can kept them private, Public or open to a select few. In Flickr you can manage, organize, share and edit photos. I have not looked into the video capabilities of Flickr. The discription says you can share videos. The site is a useful location to do much of you phota work. It also lets you put your work out there for others to appreciate and use.

I like the idea that I can use Creative Commons photos with Attribution. Share the photos and let other people use my work created from the CC photos.

I would like to set up a group so that my family can share each others work and have a discussion group.

I was surprised to learn that I could include movie clips in my blogs. The instructor was very helpful. What we need now is a video editor.

The ability to pass word protect a particular blog makes blogging more useful to me. Also, the fact I can create a club blog with defined uses is use full.

“Fair Use”

With the arrival of Podcasts on the media scene, Podcasting individuals have run into material copyright regulations. There are four rules that a user of copyrighted material must consider in order minimize the risk of copyright litigation. These rules are called “Fair Use” rules or guidelines:

1. The nature of the use.
2. How it is used.
3. Amount of use.
4. The effect the use on the market.

The nature of the use includes the act of transforming the original work. Transforming the work into something new is considered acceptable. (A new art form or technique using the original media as it’s foundation.). How it is used refers to extracting data from the original work and using it in your work with a reference to the original. (Using factual information from the original work.) The amount of use is a hard issue to clarify. If you use the heart of the work (published or non-published) it is not considered “Fair Use”.

If your “Fair Use” Material changes the market for the original work, this is taboo. A new art form that enhances the original works market value or does not decrease it’s value is OK. All four rules are inter-related. The nature of use (Transformed) is the most important. The remaining three add nuances to the “Fair Use”.

I want to put my media out there for the public to enjoy. I am concerned about how the media will be used, who owns it, who will use it and who will benefit financially from it. I want to copyright it! If I use copyright agents, they control what happens to my work. Creative Commons (CC) has developed a licensing mechanism that allows me to choose how my work will be used. I can choose several licensing options (non-commercial, for money, for notoriety…). CC has developed all the tools, payment options and legalizes for me to copyright my media and issue licenses. They have made it easy for me to control and protect my work. I can make my work available to anyone. Each individual can have a separate type of license that best fits his/her use. I get what I what for the use and CC gets what they want. A restriction is that transformations of my licensed original work must go back to the CC “library”. A win-win!!

My Podcast Project

I am having trouble getting Mediafly to work on my computer. I have reviewed several Podcasts. The “talk show” formats do not turn me on. I like the NOVA and the NASA sites. I review the Podcasts at work; therefore, I do not have a lot of time to spend researching sites. The talk show Podcasts appear to be amatueuish. The Nova and the NASA Podcasts are slick.

My Podcast idea is to tell stories about my old cars: How I found them; Where they were; How I got them to Vermont and the happenings that occurred during the trips.

The five tentative episodes are: 1951 Studebaker; 1951 Willys PU; 1962 Dodge Dart; 1966 Studebaker Wagonaire, and a 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser.

The content will be a verbal story with still images and background music. I put the cars up for the winter. I have to get the images ASAP. If I can get a Camcorder, I may try video.

The community that will want to view/listen to my podcasts are people who like old cars, car stories and car adventures that are funny and sometimes dangerous. (Loosing a front wheel at 2:00AM on the Interstate is what I call dangerous.)
